PHILADELPHIA - Revenge is sweet...at least if you're Kamesha Hairston and Lady Comfort. Hairston earned her third straight double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds and Comfort scored a career-high 25 points to lead Temple over Stony Brook, 72-58, on Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center. Hairston had a double-double in the first half (14 pts, 10 rebs) for the second straight game, and Comfort posted 18 second-half points, to allow the Owls to avenge a devastating 58-56 loss to the Seawolves last season. Comfort added seven rebounds and a career-high three steals. Temple improves to 4-3 on the year, while the Seawolves fall to 2-4 overall.
The first half was sloppy and physical, with neither team having a great day from the field. Temple shot just 35.5% from the field, while the Seawolves made just 35.7% of their attempts. Neither team took care of the ball particularly well either, with Stony Brook committing 12 turnovers and the Owls totaling nine. Hairston got started from the very first whistle, netting the Owls' first basket just three seconds into the game, and, by the eight minute mark, netted a game-high 13 points. Stony Brook fought hard to keep up with Temple, never trailing by more than four points, until a 7-0 TU run made it 17-8 with just over 12 minutes to go. Stony Brook came back yet again and a Jessica Smith lay-up at 1:40 made it a three point game (30-27). Temple sank three free throws in the final minute to take a 33-27 lead at the break.
Temple put the game away in the second half, slowly increasing its lead by 10, 14, 16 and even 19 points (72-53) with just over a minute to play in the game. The Seawolves refused to go away quietly and, after the Owls increased their lead to 14, Stony Brook put together a 14-6 run to make it 53-47 at 8:28. That would be as close as they would get, however, as Ashley Morris found Comfort three straight trips down the floor for six straight points. Temple cruised to the 72-58 result to stay undefeated on its home court in the 2006-07 season.
LaKeisha Eaddy scored a career-high nine points to go along with four assists and two steals. Morris dished a team-high five assists. Temple out-rebounded Stony Brook, 37-42 and used a 51.6% shooting percentage in the second half to finish with a 43.5% performance. Smith and Mykeema Ford led the Seawolves with 16 points a piece. Ford added five assists. Dana Ferraro grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Temple continues it home stand on Sunday afternoon when it welcomes the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins at 2 p.m.
