WOMEN'S FENCING MAKE IT A 1, 2, 3 DAY AT NIWFA CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEDFORD, MA--The Temple women's fencing team proved itself worthy of the 10th place national ranking it gained this past week from the USFCA Coaches' Poll by winning the overall team Olympians Trophy at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships held in Medford, Massachusetts on Saturday. The squads' finished 1, 2 and 3 in their weapons. The foil squad captured its weapon's championship, the epee team finished second and the sabre team third.

Led by senior captain Jenna Remmert who finished with an individual foil placement of seventh, the foil squad won the NIWFA Foil Championship and was awarded the Mildred Stuyvesant Fish Trophy. Fellow teammate and senior Maryanne Forsythe finished 10th.

The Epee squad placed second in the epee event. Sophomore Brianna Ferrara finished second and freshman Melissa Forsythe third.

The Sabre squad placed third in its weapons event. Individually freshman Ashlee Phillips finished fourth, sophomore Kristine Jones seventh and Keri Ecker eleventh.

Seventeen teams were in attendance at the event including Drew University and Johns Hopkins. The NIWFA Championship began in 1929. It is the oldest women's championship in US History.

The Cherry and White compete next at the NCAA Regionals in Durham, North Carolina, Saturday, March 4.
