PHILADELPHIA- Candice Dupree netted a game-high 16 points to lead the 20th ranked Temple women's basketball team, 65-46, over the visiting Richmond Spiders (8-14, 3-7) on Friday night at the Liacouras Center. Khadija Bowens chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Morris contributed a solid eight points and a career-high six assists. The Owls led by as much as 26 points en route to their seventh Conference victory.
Temple jumped out to a 4-0 lead off of free throws by Bowens and a jumper by Kamesha Hairston. Ania Grabas finally got the Spiders on the board at 18:20, sinking a trey to make it 4-3. The Owls continued to shoot well throughout the half and built a 10-point lead (23-13) with eight and a half minutes to go. The Spiders struggled to hit shots and made just one field goal in the final five minutes of the half, allowing Temple to take a 31-17 lead into the locker room. TU shot just 39.4% from the field to finish the half after shooting 50% for most of the stanza, but it was enough to top Richmond's poor performance. The Spiders committed 12 turnover and made just seven of 26 field goals.
Temple came out firing in the second half, extending its lead to as much as 26 (60-34) with just over eight minutes to go. The Spiders went on a 12-5 run to finish the game but could get no closer than 19 points as seven out of 11 Temple players notched at least two points.
Dupree grabbed six rebounds, all of which were defensive, while Lady Comfort contributed a solid effort of seven points and seven boards.
Araceli Gil led Richmond with 12 points, while Sarah Williams had 10. Amber Petillion grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Owls continue their home stand on Sunday, when they host the Duquesne Dukes at 2 p.m.
