--The Temple women's fencing team blanked the competition (6-0) as they hosted the Temple Invitational at McGonigle Hall Sunday. Temple went undefeated against Fairleigh Dickinson (20-7), Steven's (23-4), Hunter (25-2), Drew (20-7), James Madison (27-0) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (27-0). Four fencers went undefeated individually and all Temple fencers finished the day with a winning record.
The Owls boasted four undefeated fencers on the day which included freshman epee fencer Melissa Forsythe who went 10-0, freshman foilist Sabrina Shapiro (11-0), sophomore sabre fencer Kristine Jones (14-0) and senior foilist and team captain Jenna Remmert who led with a 15-0 unbeaten streak for the day.
Individually, each Temple fencer had a winning record. Sophomore Melissa Forsythe's undefeated record of 10-0 led the epee squad. Fellow sophomores Marla Nacey, Brianna Ferrara and Ninah Bell contributed a 10-1, 6-3 and 4-1 record, respectively. Freshman Kaitlyn Uckert ended 4-3 on the day for the epee squad.
Undefeated foilists Jenna Remmert and Sabrina Shapiro led the way for their squad with 15-0 and 11-0 finishes. Senior Maryanne Forsythe ended 9-2. Freshman Nina Gernes was just shy of joining the ranks of undefeated Temple fencers for the day with her 10-1 finish.
Senior Keri Ecker contributed an 11-3 sabre effort to the overall Temple win Sunday. The squad was led by undefeated sophomore Kristine Jones (14-0). Freshman Ashlee Phillips ended 8-6 on the day.
The squad showed substantial improvement against Drew University according to Coach Brad Baker. The Owls only marginally won against Drew 15-12 two weeks ago at the Philadelphia Invitational Multi-Meet. Sunday the owls widened the win to a 20-7 finish.
Temple improves to a 14-5 (.737) season record. They will travel to Durham, North Carolina this weekend to compete in the Duke Multi-Meet on Saturday, February 11.
