3.10.06 | Baseball
HILO, HI -- Temple dropped its fourth straight game to Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday as the Vulcans swept a doubleheader from the Owls, 6-5 and 11-4. The Cherry and White battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the last inning of the opener, tying the score with a four-run seventh, but UHH scored the game-winner in its half of the frame. Sophomore Devon Swope had five hits on the day, including three doubles, to extend his hitting-streak to seven games.
Behind 5-1 going into the top of the seventh inning, Temple staged a furious comeback. Junior Nick Fasano legged out an infield single and freshman Lenny DelGrippo and sophomore Tom Dolan singled to load the bases.
With one out, Swope ripped a double down the left-field line to score a pair of runs and bring the score to 5-3. Redshirt freshman Pat Riley followed with a two-run single to tie the score. Sophomore Frank Nunan also singled to give TU first and second with one out. But a fly-out and caught stealing quickly ended the rally.
Senior Tim Andrel, who replaced starter Tim Foulkrod in the sixth, hit the first batter to start the seventh. After a groundout, A.J. Satale doubled down the left-field line to give Hawaii-Hilo the 6-5 win.
Swope was 2-for-3 in the contest with a double and three RBI. Nunan and Fasano both had a single and double for Temple. Foulkrod threw five innings and allowed only two earned runs. He struck out four batters. Andrel (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up one earned run in 1.1 innings.
In game two, the Vulcans (7-13) scored 11 unanswered runs over the first six innings and coasted to an 11-4 win. The Owls scored their four runs in the eighth on a RBI single by DelGrippo, a two-run single by redshirt freshman Jamie Abercrombie and an RBI single by freshman Steve Mury.
Sophomore Eric Fritz was tagged with the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 3.1 innings. Freshman Marc Tankel made his first collegiate appearance, throwing 2.1 shutout innings in relief.
Swope led the way with three hits, including two doubles. Nunan, DelGrippo, and Abercrombie each had a pair of hits for Temple.
The Cherry and White (2-7) will wrap up its trip to the Aloha State with a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. (8 p.m. EST).
