BASEBALL WRAPS UP HAWAII TRIP WITH 7-0 WIN OVER VULCANS

3.11.06 | Baseball

HILO, HI -- Temple concluded its ten-day trip to the Aloha State with a 7-0 altercation-shortened victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday. Sophomore Arshwin Asjes won his second straight outing, allowing just one hit in five innings of work. Junior Nick Fasano had a two-out, bases-clearing double in the fourth to put the Owls ahead 7-0.

Asjes, who took a no-hitter into the fifth, struck out five and did not walk a batter in the complete game victory. He picked up his second win on the trip to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Offensively, sophomore Frank Nunan and redshirt freshman Pat Riley remained hot at the plate, each collecting a pair of hits. Nunan drove in a pair of runs and also scored twice and returns to Temple batting a team-high .432. Riley isn't far behind at .400 and has hit safely in six straight contests. Freshman Lenny DelGrippo added two hits as well.

The Cherry and White (3-7) got on the board in the third with four runs. Freshman Casey Sellen reached base on an error to open the inning. Sophomore Devon Swope extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single and Riley followed with yet another single to load the bases. Nunan drove in two runs with his double to left-center. Riley scored on a wild pitch and a DelGrippo RBI single plated Nunan to give TU a 4-0 lead.

The Owls added three more runs in the fourth on Fasano's bases-clearing double. With two outs, Riley singled and walks to Nunan and senior Marc Wagner to load the bases. Fasano then ripped his team-leading sixth two-bagger of the season to put the visitors ahead 7-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Vulcans began to work their late-inning magic. After Chris Campbell singled and stole second, Michael Higa tripled to right-center field to end the shutout. Mark Veneri's fly out to right field was deep enough to score Higa.

That's when the fireworks ended the game.

As Higa crossed the plate, he bumped Owl catcher Marc Wagner and missed
home plate. As he returned to touch the plate, the duo began a shoving match which emptied both benches. The game was called at that point, with the score reverting back to the last completed inning, giving TU a 7-0 win.

Temple returns to the east coast for its home opener on Tuesday, March 14 against Lehigh. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m. Live statistics of the game, via GameTracker, will be available via owlsports.com for all home contests.
