LEHIGH SPOILS BASEBALL HOME OPENER WITH 23-4 WIN
3.14.06 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- On more than one level, the Temple baseball team probably wishes it was still on its spring trip to Hawaii. With gusting winds making fly balls treacherous, plummeting temperatures and a Lehigh offense that just kept hitting, the Owls probably will be remembering the Aloha State fondly tonight. But the team was back at Ambler Field for the first time this season and the visiting Mountain Hawks spoiled the home opener by taking a 23-4 win.
Lehigh (6-7) scored in all but two innings, including seven unearned runs in the fifth and pounded out a season-high 23 hits, including nine for extra bases. The Mountain Hawks were led by John Zaszewski, Mike Sandolato and Jeff Bernfield, who all drove in four runs. Matt McBride doubled, homered and scored four runs for the guests.
Temple (3-8) fell behind early and never seemed to get on track offensively. Junior Dan Brady had two hits, including a homer, while freshman Lenny DelGrippo socked his first career dinger.
Senior Justin Mendek suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs in four innings. Lehigh's Kyle Collina improved to 2-1 by striking out nine in five innings. He gave up two earned runs.
Temple will take on Penn (1-7) on Wednesday at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
