AMBLER, PA -- St. John's exploded for 13 runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-0 ballgame and coasted to a 16-1 win over Temple on Wednesday at Ambler Field. The Red Storm sent 18 batters to the plate in the inning and took advantage of three TU errors to earn its sixth win in seven games. The Owls, who have lost four straight, host Saint Joseph's in the conference opener on Friday at 3 p.m.

Sophomore starter Carl Taylor was throwing well over the first five innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out three. But he ran into trouble in the sixth, as the first eight batters reached base for SJU (10-7). A trio of errors in the inning accounted for some of the damage, with only four of the 13 runs being earned in the frame. Taylor (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up five earned in 5.2 innings pitched.

Temple (5-12) got on the board in the eighth inning. Sophomore Robbie DeRafelo drew a two-out walk and scored on a RBI triple by freshman Casey Sellen. The Owls posted seven hits on the day, but six came in the first four innings. TU could not take advantage of the early success at the plate, as three outs on the bases killed rallies.

Junior Dan Brady had a pair of doubles for Temple before leaving the game with an injury. Freshman Jamie Abercrombie extended his hitting streak to ten games with a first inning single.

Jared Yecker picked up the win for St. John's to improve to 3-0. He scattered six hits over five shutout innings. A quartet of relievers allowed just one hit the rest of the way. Jeff Grantham had four hits to pace the Red Storm offense.

Temple hosts Saint Joseph's (7-14) on Friday at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Live statistics will be available via GameTracker.
