TEMPLE BATS SILENCED IN 9-0 LOSS TO SAINT JOSEPH'S

3.24.06 | Baseball

AMBLER, PA -- Saint Joseph's pounded out 16 hits and Bob Unkel tossed eight shutout innings as the Hawks beat Temple, 9-0, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams on Friday at Ambler Field. The Owls managed just three hits in the contest and have lost five straight games. The two teams will resume the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Senior Tim Foulkrod made his first start since Hawaii and was greeted by a four-run second inning. Only one run was earned in the frame, as SJU took advantage of a Temple (5-13, 0-1 A-10) error to take a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Hawks added a run in the third on a pair of singles before Foulkrod settled down and pitched three scoreless innings. He suffered the loss, despite allowing two earned runs in sixth innings.

Unkel (1-2) was nearly un-hittable on the mound. He allowed just three hits and did not allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning. The sophomore struck out eight batters before giving way to Ben Wendle in the ninth.

Sophomores Devon Swope and Tom Dolan and freshman Lenny DelGrippo had the only safeties for the Owls.

Tim Smith and Jeremy Jakubowski each had four hits to pace the SJU (8-16, 1-0 A-10) offense.

The series resumes on Saturday at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Live statistics will be available via GameTracker.
