MEN'S CREW RECLAIMS MURPHY CUP

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple Men's Varsity 8 reclaimed the Murphy Cup, defeating George Washington in the final event of the 24th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta held on the Schuylkill River Saturday afternoon.  The Owls, who have won the Murphy Cup ever year with the exception of 2005, earned 37 points which was good for a second place among the 32 participating teams.  Saint Joseph's won the Sean Brennan Points Trophy with 56 points.

"It was a successful regatta," said Dr. Gavin White, in his 26th season as Temple's men's crew coach.  "It was the largest field in the history of the Murphy Cup, and our top two crews were victorious."

Temple's won both the men's varsity eight and second varsity eight finals.  The men's varsity eight, comprised of Rory Roberts (cox), Peter Gostling (stroke), James Harding (7-seat), Dante Cammarata (6), Chris Thomas (5), Tom Haubrich (4), Robert Protesto (3), T.J. Burke (2) and Mike Shisler (bow), defeated George Washington by three and three-tenths seconds to win the program's 23rd Murphy Cup.  The Owls second varsity eight, comprised of Thomas Goldner (cox) Andreas Mantzoukas (stroke), Matt Hanlin (7), Chris Bushek (6), Don Powers (5), Bill Gennaro (4), Joseph Welch (3), Sam Cunningham (2) and Timothy Malloy (bow), edged Saint Joseph's by two and five-tenths seconds.

The Owls varsity four boat of Michael Burger (cox), Nicholas Kahn (stroke), Brendan Uhll (3), Eric Alexander (2) and Richard Moore (bow), placed second, just two-tenths of a second behind first place Fordham.   The Rams victory earned them the Ken Corkery Trophy.  

The Temple women's team earned fourth place finishes by both its varsity eight and second varsity eight.   The Owls' varsity eight was comprised of Laura Altimari, Amanda Barr, Rachel Jordan, Lauren Fattori, Kristen Herrmann, Nicole Warrick, Ulana Luciw, Stephanie Hanlin and Carolina Kelley (cox).  The second varsity eight was comprised of Jaqueline Swan, Sara Nguyen, Nicole Toner, Kate Guth, Leah Silverstein, Anne Mikolajewski, Emily Smith, Laura Austin and Jennifer Azeles (cox).

The TU women's freshman novice eight placed fifth.

The Temple men's and women's crew teams will travel west to take part in the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1-2.
