ASJES EXTENDS SCORELESS STREAK WITH COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT OF SJU

AMBLER, PA -- Sophomore Arshwin Asjes extended his scoreless inning streak to 26 with a complete-game shutout as Temple defeated Saint Joseph's, 2-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday. The right-hander has not allowed a run since February 26 against LSU and lowered his ERA to 0.93. It was the first nine-inning, complete-game shutout by a Temple hurler since Mike Caron did the trick on April 21, 2002 at Massachusetts.
"I just tried to bear down out there," Asjes said. "I mixed my fastball and slider pretty well and was able to get some big outs."
Asjes scattered six hits and struck out four batters in his nine-inning gem. Only one SJU (8-17, 1-1 A-10) runner advanced past second base and Asjes was never in any real trouble. He threw 125 pitches and effectively mixed a hard fastball with a nasty slider to improve to 3-1.
"Arshy gave us a great outing today in less than ideal conditions," head coach Rob Valli said. "He really battled out there and came up big in some critical spots."
After five innings, it didn't look like either team was going to score as Asjes battled with the Hawks' Jason Hessler in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. Hessler struck out seven in seven innings and allowed just one earned run, but suffered the loss to drop to 2-5 on the season.
Temple (6-13, 1-1), which has struggled offensively of late, got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Jamie Abercrombie singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. Junior Dan Brady doubled down the left-field line to put the Owls up, 1-0.
The Cherry and White added an insurance run in the eighth off SJU reliever Mark Imbo. Sophomore Frank Nunan reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Brady walk, and scored on a two-out single by freshman Pat Riley.
SJU had runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Asjes induced a double-play groundball to end the game.
Brady had a pair of hits for Temple, while Jeremy Jakubowksi had three of SJU's six hits.
The series wraps up on Sunday at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Live statistics will be available via GameTracker.
