3.28.06 | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA -- Temple sophomore Arshwin Asjes was named the Philadelphia Diamond Five Pitcher of the Week, in voting conducted by the area head coaches. The Willemstad, Curacao native tossed a complete-game shutout against Saint Joseph's on Saturday to extend his scoreless inning streak to 26.
Asjes allowed six hits and struck out four to improve to 3-1 with a complete-game shutout against the Hawks. He has not allowed a run in 26 innings and lowered his ERA to 0.93. The last time a team scored against the Curacao native was then #15 LSU on February 26. It was the first nine-inning, complete game shutout by a Temple pitcher since Mike Caron beat UMass, 7-0, on April 21, 2002.
Saint Joseph's Jeremy Jakubowski was named the Diamond Five Player of the Week. The sophomore rebounded from a 0-for-3 showing against Villanova and went 7-for-13 against Temple to finish the week with a .438 batting average. He led the Hawks in runs (five) and RBI (six) for the week. Jakubowski also pitched two innings without allowing a run.
Several Diamond Five teams will meet up this week. Saint Joseph's travels to Penn on Wednesday and visits La Salle this weekend for a three-game Atlantic 10 series. The Quakers visit Villanova on Tuesday for a first round Liberty Bell Classic game.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, the Diamond Five is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Diamond Five will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday. The first-ever All-Diamond Five team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
