ASJES, BRADY PACE BASEBALL IN 5-0 VICTORY OVER HAWAII-HILO

HILO, HI  -- Sophomore Arshwin Asjes tossed six shutout innings and junior Dan Brady drove in three runs, including a two-run homerun, as Temple defeated Hawaii-Hilo, 5-0, on Sunday. Redshirt freshman Jamie Abercrombie made his first collegiate hit a memorable one with a ninth-inning homer.

The Owls (2-3) won their second straight game over the Vulcans (3-13) on the back of Asjes and sophomore Rob Licata, who combined to shutout UHH over nine innings. Asjes (1-1) scattered three hits and fanned three batters in picking up his first win at Temple after transferring from Gloucester CC. Licata pitched the final three frames and allowed a single hit while striking out three.

Offensively, Temple used homeruns from Brady and Abercrombie to post season-highs in hits (nine) and runs (five). Sophomore Frank Nunan had two hits and extended his hitting streak to ten games.

"I got a pitch on the inside part of the plate and was able to turn on it," Brady said about his first homer of the season. "It came during a key part of the game, with two outs in the fifth, so I think it gave us some momentum."

Redshirt freshman Pat Riley made his third straight start at a different position, this time getting the nod at second base. The North Wales, Pa. native, who has made starts at shortstop and first base, went 1-for-4 at the plate.

The Cherry and White got on the board in the first inning as a RBI single from Brady plated Nunan, who led off the game with a single. The duo teamed up again in the fifth, as Brady's two-run dinger down the leftfield line scored Nunan (double). An RBI double by junior Nick Fasano scored Riley (single) in the sixth and Abercrombie's ninth-inning homer accounted for all of the Temple offense.

"We played a real good team game today," Brady said. "We were able to get guys on, move them over and drive them in."

Freshman Lenny DelGrippo made his first collegiate start at first base and picked up his first hit, a single up-the-middle in the second.

Michael Higa had two doubles for Hawaii-Hilo. Ryan Hanohano (0-4) allowed three earned runs in six innings to take the loss.

The series resumes with a doubleheader on Monday at 3 p.m. (8 p.m. EST).
