REMMERT AND FERRARA HEADED TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

Durham, NC---Temple's foil and epee squad will each be represented at the NCAA Championships in two weeks. Jenna Remmert and Brianna Ferrara each earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship at Saturday's NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships in Durham, NC. Thirteen schools participated with 102 women fencers competing on the day. Seven women qualify for Nationals from each weapon based on a combination of their season record and Regional finish.

Senior team captain Jenna Remmert captured her fourth straight bid to the NCAA Championships with a team high fourth place finish in foil. In 2002-03, her rookie season, she placed 18th at Nationals, in 2004 19th and as the solo qualifier for Temple last season finished 21st.

Freshman foilist Nina Gernes was only one spot away from earning a spot with an eighth place finish but may still head to Houston. She and teammate Ashlee Phillips were submitted as at-large candidates to the national committee. The decision as to who will receive the only two at-large spots in the entire country will be announced next week.

Also competing in foil was sophomore Samantha Myles finished 15th and freshman Sabrina Shapiro ended two spots behind Myles at 17th.

Sophomore Brianna Ferrara was the only epeeist to qualify with a sixth place finish. Last year at Regionals she finished just out of contention for the NCAA Championship with a 10th place finish. Also competing in the epee competition was sophomore Marla Nacey who ended 14th and freshmen Melissa Forsythe and Kaitlyn Uckert. Forsythe finished four spots behind Nacey at 18th and Uckert ended the day 34th.

Newcomer Ashlee Phillips fiinished sixth in the sabre competition and will await the at-large decision to determine her NCAA Championship destiny. Sophomore Kristine Jones finished 14th and senior Keri Ecker 18th.

The NCAA Championships will take place March 16-19 in Houston, Texas.
