3.7.06 | Baseball
HILO, HI -- Temple pounded out 18 hits but was swept by Hawaii-Hilo in a doubleheader, 5-2 and 5-3, on Monday afternoon. Redshirt freshman Pat Riley collected five safeties on the day, including a 4-for-4 performance in game one, while junior Dan Brady tripled and homered in the nightcap. After an off day on Tuesday, the series resumes on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (11 p.m. EST).
Temple got on the board in the first in game one. Sophomore Devon Swope doubled and moved to third on a Riley single. Sophomore Frank Nunan singled to center to plate Swope and give the Owls first and second with no outs. TU was unable to cross the plate again in the frame, as a strikeout and double-play killed the rally.
The Vulcans answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning off sophomore starter Tom Dolan. A two-out single by Robby Mowers tied the score at 1-1. UHH took a 4-1 lead after a three-spot in the third. Mowers doubled in a run and A.J. Satale hit a two-run homer in the inning. The hosts added an insurance run in the fifth to chase Dolan. Sophomore Carl Taylor got out of a jam in the fifth and pitched two shutout innings in relief.
The Cherry and White tried to put together a rally in the seventh, but only scored one run. Senior Marc Wagner hit a pinch-hit double with one out. Riley connected on his fourth hit of the game to drive in junior Josh Wernick, who was pinch-running for Wagner.
Dolan (0-1) suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing five earned runs. He did strike out five batters. Ryan Olszewski (2-2) picked up the win for UHH.
Junior Nick Fasano had a pair of doubles for Temple.
Senior Justin Mendek pitched five shutout innings and the Owls (2-5) held a 3-0 lead after five innings but ended up dropping the nightcap, 5-3. Mendek scattered ten hits and pitched out of jams in every inning. He stranded 12 runners in all, but was credited with the no-decision.
Brady hit his second homerun of the series in the second inning to put Temple up 2-0. Brady was also involved in the fourth inning, tripling with one out in the frame. He scored on a Riley sacrifice fly to put the visitors ahead, 3-0.
From that point on, it was all Hawaii-Hilo (5-13). The Vulcans scored a pair of runs in the sixth off sophomore reliever Eric Lovelace, all with two outs. UHH welcomed freshman Joe McGilligan to the game in the seventh and took advantage of two TU errors to plate three runs (one earned) to take a 5-3 win.
Senior Tim Andrel pitched the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a run. Sophomore Lucio Rainelli had two hits for Temple.
McGilligan (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up two unearned runs, in his first collegiate appearance. Vinnie Biggs (1-2) pitched 2.2 innings of shutout relief for the win.
The two teams will meet on Wednesday in a nine-inning contest beginning at 6 p.m. (11 p.m. EST).
