DELAWARE USES BIG SIXTH INNING TO BEAT TEMPLE, 18-8
4.12.06 | Baseball
NEWARK, DE -- Delaware used a nine-run sixth inning to break open a 7-7 ballgame and coasted to a 18-8 victory over Temple on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue Hens only had three hits in the inning, but took advantage of five hit batsmen, three walks and an error to take a 16-7 lead. Temple, which scored a season-high eight runs, was led by sophomore Tom Dolan and freshman Pat Riley, who each had three hits and three RBI.
Freshman Lenny DelGrippo also had three hits, including a double and triple for TU. Freshman Steve Mury doubled among his two hits.
UD (17-13) had a 7-3 lead going into the fifth, but the Owls scored four runs to tie the score. Sophomore Frank Nunan was hit by a pitch to open the frame and after a pop-out, a single by DelGrippo put runners on first and second. Riley drove in his third run of the game with his third straight single and Dolan followed with his first collegiate homer, a line-drive to left-center that tied the score.
From that point on, it was all Delaware. The hosts scored nine runs in the decisive sixth inning, but only three were earned as an early Temple error prolonged the inning. The Blue Hens, which lead the nation in homeruns per game, knocked three out of the park on the day.
Temple (7-23) had an impressive showing offensively and its 14 hits were one short of a season-high. Seven of the nine starters recorded at least one base knock.
Sophomore Eric Lovelace suffered the loss for TU to drop to 0-1. Delaware's Brent Rogers earned his first collegiate win with three no-hit innings.
The Owls host Rhode Island (17-6, 6-2) in an Atlantic 10 series beginning on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Live statistics will be available via owlsports.com.
