PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA -- Villanova's Ryan Wendler scattered five hits over eight shutout innings as the Wildcats downed Temple, 8-0, in Philadelphia Diamond Five action on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls sent seven pitchers to the mound, with four throwing scoreless innings. Freshman Jamie Abercrombie tripled to pace the TU offense.
Wendler, who ran his scoreless innings streak to 22 with the victory, only allowed two runners past first base in improving to 4-2. The sophomore struck out three and walked two.
After being rained out on Saturday and Sunday, head coach Rob Valli had a full complement of hurlers to use against the Wildcats. Sophomore Arshwin Asjes threw well in two innings of action, striking out the side in the first. But VU made the most of one swing of the bat, as a Matt McFolling two-run homerun to right gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. It was enough to hand Asjes the loss, dropping the right-hander to 3-5 this season.
Villanova (21-18) added two more runs in the third and four in the seventh to bring the final tally to 8-0.The Wildcats have now won seven of their last eight games.
The Cherry and White (7-30) had its best chance to get on the board in the sixth when Abercrombie led off with a triple to right. But the visitors went down in order to end the threat.
Senior Tim Foulkrod and sophomores Eric Fritz, Rob Licata and Eric Lovelace all threw scoreless innings for Temple.
The Owls, who have lost 11 in a row and 22 of their last 24 games, host George Mason tomorrow at Ambler Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
