GEORGE MASON DEFEATS TEMPLE, 15-1
4.26.06 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- George Mason pounded 18 hits and freshman pitcher Mike Modica threw nine innings without allowing an earned run as the Patriots downed Temple, 15-1, on Wednesday at Ambler Field. GMU opened a 12-1 lead after five innings and never looked back in handing the Owls their 12th straight loss. A pair of freshman--Steve Mury and Casey Sellen--had a pair of hits to pace TU.
George Mason (15-26) scored an unearned run in the opening frame and added three more in the second. After a scoreless third, the Patriots opened the game up with five in the fourth and there in the fifth. A two-run single by Scott Kreiger highlighted the five-run fourth, while Robby Jacobsen's titanic two-run homer to left-center provided most of the damage in the fifth. GMU, which set a season-high with 15 runs, added a run in the seventh and two unearned runs in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Modica scattered eight hits to earn the complete-game victory and improve to 3-2 this season. He allowed only one unearned run, coming in the first inning, and only allowed one runner past second base. The southpaw struck out eight batters and walked one.
Temple scored its only run in the opening frame as sophomore Frank Nunan drew a two-out walk. He stole second and scored on a mishandled groundball off the bat of junior Dan Brady.
Senior Tim Andrel (0-2) suffered the loss for TU, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) in 4.2 innings.
All nine starters had at least one hit for George Mason, led by Matt York's four. Krieger (2-for-6) drove in four runs and Ryan Uphouse had three hits, including a double.
The Owls (7-31) visit Massachusetts in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. Gametracker and streaming audio will be available via owlsports.com.
