PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore pitcher Arshwin Asjes, who did not allow a run in 25 innings last month, has been named the Owlsports.com Athlete of the Month for March. Asjes compiled a 3-0 record, including two complete-game shutouts, and struck out 18 batters. Opponents hit just .128 off him in four starts.
The Willemstad, Curacao native started the month with six shutout innings in a 5-0 win at Hawaii-Hilo on March 5. He allowed three hits and struck out four batters to pick up his first victory at Temple. On March 11, he allowed just one-hit in five shutout innings as the Owls beat Hawaii-Hilo, 7-0.
On March 18, Asjes threw five scoreless innings against Saint Peter's at Ambler Field. He allowed only one hit and fanned five batters, but received the no-decision as a late SPC comeback gave the visitors a 6-5 win.
On week later, the right-hander pitched a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's. He scattered six hits and struck out four in the first nine-inning, complete-game shutout by a Temple pitcher since Mike Caron beat Massachusetts, 7-0, on April 21, 2002. Asjes picked up Philadelphia Diamond Five Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance against the Hawks.
Overall, Asjes is 3-2 with a 2.18 ERA. Temple (6-19, 1-5 A-10) returns to the diamond on Wednesday against Lehigh. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Ambler Field.
