FORDHAM HANDS OWLS FIFTH STRAIGHT A-10 LOSS

BRONX, NY -- Temple dropped its fifth straight Atlantic 10 contest on Friday afternoon, falling to Fordham, 6-3, at Houlihan Park. The Owls made the most of just five hits, scoring its runs on a pair of sacrifice flies and a groundout, but the Rams pounded out 11 hits to secure the win. Freshman Steve Mury led TU with a pair of hits.
Senior Tim Foulkrod threw a complete game, but allowed six runs (five earned) in eight innings to fall to 1-4. The right-hander has now dropped three straight decisions.
Fordham (14-15, 6-1 A-10) scored two runs in the third on a two-run double by John Mollicone. With two outs, Rich Goulian walked ad moved to third on a Smith double. Mollicone then blooped a double into center, scoring Goulian and Smith.
The Owls (7-20, 1-6) cut the Fordham lead to one with a run in the fifth as sophomore Lucio Rainelli opened the frame with a double, moved to third on a Mury single and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Casey Sellen.
Fordham made it a 5-1 game with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including a pair with two outs. Temple scored once in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore pinch-hitter Tom Dolan, but the Rams responded with a run in the bottom the inning to regain a four-run lead. Greg Smith led off the Fordham eighth with his third double of the game and took third when a pick off attempt from Foulkrod went into center. He then scored on a Mollicone ground out.
The Owls made it a 6-3 game with a run in the eighth when sophomore Frank Nunan opened the inning with a single, stole second and moved to third when the throw to second sailed out to center. He then scored on a ground out from Lenny DelGrippo.
Craig Tscherednikov (2-3), who came on in relief when Fordham starter Cory Riordan left the game with a injury, picked up the win for the Rams, throwing 3.1 innings of two-hit relief.
The teams will continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sophomore Arshwin Asjes (3-2, 2.18 ERA) will take on Fordham's Javier Martinez (3-4, 4.68).
