5.12.06 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- St. Bonaventure slugged four homeruns and used a four-run fifth inning to break open a close game to defeat Temple, 12-2, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Ambler Field. SBU's John Zinnicker kept the Owls off-balance and allowed just one earned run in eight innings, while striking out six. Freshman Casey Sellen had a career-high three hits for the Cherry and White.
The Bonnies' (23-17, 15-6 A-10) Randy Moley led off the game with a homerun to left and the visitors never relinquished the lead. It was one of four dingers on the day for SBU, including a towering shot to dead-center by Josh Perkins. Leading 2-1, St. Bonaventure took advantage of a costly Temple error to score four runs (three unearned) in the decisive fifth. SBU added two in the seventh and three in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Temple (11-37, 5-15) got on the board in the third on an RBI-single by Dan Brady that scored Sellen. Sophomore Devon Swope drove in a run in the fifth on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Senior Justin Mendek suffered the loss for TU, throwing six innings and allowing seven runs (four earned). He struck out a season-high five batters but struggled with his control, issuing six walks, to drop to 1-6 this season.
SBU's T.J. Pennino went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
The two teams will continue the series on Saturday. Game time has been moved to noon because of the threat of inclement weather later in the day.
