5.13.06 | Baseball

AMBLER, PA -- Sophomore Arshwin Asjes threw seven innings of two-hit ball and Temple received timely hitting up and down the lineup to defeat St. Bonaventure, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Ambler Field. Asjes (5-6) allowed one earned run and struck out four to win his second straight start. Eight Owls had one base-hit and four different players drove in runs.

Asjes had impressive stuff for the second straight outing. He did not allow a hit until the fifth and did not allow a runner past second base during his 7.1 innings on the hill. Over his last two starts, he has allowed just eight hits and three earned runs in 16.2 innings for an ERA of 1.65.

At the plate, Temple (12-37, 6-15 A-10) got big hits when it needed them. Neither team crossed the plate until the sixth when the Owls broke the scoreless tie with a pair of two-out runs. Sophomore Devon Swope walked to lead off the frame and stole second. After a strikeout, freshman Lenny DelGrippo was walked intentionally. A fly-out gave SBU two outs, but sophomore Tom Dolan singled home Swope for the first run of the game. Freshman Mike Sweet then singled to right to plate DelGrippo and put the Owls on top, 2-0.

Freshman Casey Sellen led off the seventh with a double and scored on Swope's two-bagger to left off reliever Jim Britton. Junior Dan Brady then singled up the middle to plate Swope and give the Owls a 4-0 advantage.

Asjes was lifted in the eighth for senior Tim Foulkrod with a runner on second and one out. The Bonnies scratched two runs across in the frame to cut the deficit to 4-2, but with rain falling, Foulkrod pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Cody Vincent (5-3) suffered the loss for SBU (23-18, 15-7), giving up three earned runs in 6.1 innings. He struck out five batters.

The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday. Game time has been moved to 11 a.m. because of the threat of inclement weather later in the day.
