MEN'S CREW QUALIFIES THREE BOATS AT DAD VAIL REGATTA

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple men's crew had a strong first day at the 68th Dad Vail Regatta Friday. The Owls, under the direction of head coach Gavin White, qualified their varsity eight, second varsity eight and heavyweight four crews into Saturday races.
The Varsity eight, comprised of freshman Thomas Goldner (cox), graduate student Peter Gostling (stroke), sophomore James Harding (7-seat), junior Dante Cammarata (6), graduate student Chris Thomas (5), sophomore Tom Haubrich (4), sophomore Robert Protesto (3), senior T.J. Burke (2) and senior Mike Shisler (bow), easily defeated second-place Minnesota in its heat, winning by 16 seconds to qualify for the semifinals. The Owls, one of the favorites to win the Richard O'Brien Trophy, have won the varity eight in 20 of the last 23 years.
The Owls second varsity eight of sophomore Rory Roberts (cox), senior Andreas Mantzoukas (stroke), junior Matt Hanlin (7), sophomore Bill Gennaro (6), sophomore Don Powers (5), junior Chris Bushek (4), sophomore Joseph Welch (3), junior Cy Haines (2) and junior Timothy Malloy (bow), defeated Army by five seconds to win their heat. They advance to Saturday's final.
The men's varsity four of freshman Michael Berger (cox), sophomore Sam Cunningham (stroke), sophomore Nicholas Vlahos (3), senior Jason Hart (2) and junior Aaron McHargue (bow) placed second to Cal-Long Beach in its race to qualify for Saturday's semifinals.
