MEN'S CREW WINS TWO GOLD MEDALS AT DAD VAIL REGATTA

5.13.06 | Men's Crew

.PHILADELPHIA  -- Marietta edged Temple in the men's varsity eight final, besting the Owl crew by six seconds in the last race of the 68th Dad Vail Regatta Saturday evening.  Temple, however, did win two gold medals at the Regatta, which was delayed twice for lighting, to help the team.  The Owls second varsity eight and freshman/novice four both won their races.

Temple placed second to Saint Joseph's in the men's point total for the Regatta with 21 points while the Owls were third in the overall point total (men's/women's) behind SJU and Purdue.

"We made improvement from last year, but it was disappointing as we had hoped to win (the varsity eight)," Temple head coach Gavin White said. "We will definitely build on this for next year."

The Varsity eight, comprised of freshman Thomas Goldner (cox), graduate student Peter Gostling (stroke), sophomore James Harding (7-seat), junior Dante Cammarata (6), graduate student Chris Thomas (5), sophomore Tom Haubrich (4), sophomore Robert Protesto (3), senior T.J. Burke (2) and senior Mike Shisler (bow), were even with Marietta after 1000 meters, but then the Ohio-based crew pulled ahead for good.

"We just came up a little short," white said.  "They raced hard for first 1000, but with 900 (meters) to go Marietta made a move and took it.

"Marietta rowed a great race, I have to give them credit. Our kids rowed hard, it just was not good enough today."

The Owls second varsity eight of sophomore Rory Roberts (cox), senior Andreas Mantzoukas (stroke), junior Matt Hanlin (7), sophomore Bill Gennaro (6), sophomore Don Powers (5), junior Chris Bushek (4), sophomore Joseph Welch (3), junior Cy Haines (2) and junior Timothy Malloy (bow), came from behind to defeat city-rival Saint Joseph's and Army over the final 700 meters.

The men's novice four comprised of freshman Michael Berger (cox), freshman Nicholas Khan (stroke), freshman William Weaver (3), junior Brendan Uhll (2) and freshman, Eric Alexander (bow) led wire-to-wire in defeating second place Union by six seconds.

The men's varsity four placed sixth in their semifinal heat and failed to qualify for the final.

The men's crew ends the season at the IRA Regatta on June 1-3 on the Cooper River
