EXPLORERS RALLY LATE, BEAT TEMPLE 12-2
5.19.06 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- La Salle scored nine runs over the final four innings to break open a 3-2 game and coasted to a 12-2 victory over Temple on Friday afternoon at Skip Wilson Field. The Explorers out-hit the Owls, 17-5, and beat the hosts for the third time this season. Freshman Jamie Abercrombie had an RBI single for TU.
What was billed as a match-up between two of the Atlantic 10's top hurlers, sophomore Arshwin Asjes and La Salle's Dan Waters, turned into a one-sided affair late in the game. The Explorers scored single runs in the sixth and seventh before posting a five-spot in the eighth to chase Asjes. The visitors added two more runs in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Waters (4-6) had one of his best outings of the season, throwing seven innings of four-hit ball without allowing an earned run. He struck out eight batters and walked just two.
Temple (12-40, 6-18 A-10) scored its only runs in the fifth as the La Salle defense was shaky in the field. Freshman Mike Sweet reached an error with one out. Classmate Carmen Del Mastro put down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw sailed into foul territory and Sweet scored from first on the play. Abercrombie followed with an RBI single to cut the La Salle led to 3-2.
But from that point on, it was all La Salle (19-31, 11-14). The Explorers recorded 12 hits and nine earned runs off Asjes, who dropped to 5-7 with the defeat. He did strikeout a season-high eight batters in 7.2 innings.
John Rickards (4-for-5) paced the Explorers with two triples and a homerun.
The two teams will meet in the season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies, honoring Tim Andrel, Tim Foulkrod, and Justin Mendek, will begin at approximately 12:45 p.m.
