5.3.06 | Baseball
AMBLER, PA -- Villanova scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back in handing Temple a 13-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon at Ambler Field. The Wildcats had 19 hits to defeat the Owls for the second time in eight days. Sophomore Frank Nunan and freshman Jamie Abercrombie each ripped two doubles for the Cherry and White.
VU (24-20) scored four runs in the first off senior starter Tim Andrel. Jeremy Hunt blasted a two-run homer deep to right field and Matt McFolling added an RBI double. Nova added three more in the second with two runs coming on a Craig Mirsky single. Mirsky and Ryan Arcadia, the top two hitters in the VU lineup, combined to go 8-for-9 with four RBI.
Abercrombie and Nunan hit back-to-back doubles in the third to put Temple on the board. The Wildcats added single runs in the fourth and fifth off freshman reliever Marc Tankel before Abercrombie and Nunan (two RBI) again hit consecutive doubles to cut the VU advantage to 9-2.
The Owls added an unearned run in the sixth. Sophomore Lucio Rainelli led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored when an errant throw from catcher Jim Gillin sailed into centerfield after trying to throw out a stealing Pat Riley. Five of Temple's six hits were doubles.
Villanova tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to complete the scoring. All nine VU starters had at least one hit, including two each from Hunt, Frank Cirone, McFolling and Gillin.
Bill Hoffman (2-0) picked up the win for Nova, throwing seven innings and striking out seven. Andrel (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs in two innings.
Temple (9-34) travels to Xavier for a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning on Friday.
