ABERCROMBIE NAMED PHILADELPHIA DIAMOND FIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR; THREE MORE OWLS HONORED

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Jamie Abercrombie was named the first-ever Philadelphia Diamond Five Rookie of the Year, in voting conducted by the city's head coaches, the organization announced on Tuesday. Junior Dan Brady and sophomores Arshwin Asjes and Devon Swope were named to the All-Diamond Five team, comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball.
Abercrombie batted .288 in his first year in the Cherry and White with four doubles, a triple and a homerun. Batting out of the lead-off spot, he scored 21 runs and led the Owls with nine stolen bases.
Brady batted .310 with seven homeruns and 35 RBI, all team-highs. He also led the Owls in runs (33), hits (57) and slugging percentage (.522) and added 16 doubles. Brady was also named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team.
Asjes went 5-7 with a 4.26 ERA and struck out 55 batters in 74 innings pitched. He started a team-high 13 games and had a scoreless inning streak of 26 frames from February 24 to March 31. A 34th round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in the 2005 MLB Draft, Asjes is a native of Willemstad, Curacao.
Swope started 45 games, mostly in rightfield, and batted .303 with a team-high 17 doubles. He scored 19 runs, drove in 18 and ranked second on the team with five stolen bases.
Villanova senior Jeremy Hunt and junior Kevin Mulvey were named the first-ever Philadelphia Diamond Five Player and Pitcher of the Year. La Salle's Lee Saverio was named the Coach of the Year and the Explorers, who went 7-2 against city competition and won the Liberty Bell Classic, were named the Diamond Five Team of the Year.
