TEMPLE SCORES TWO IN TENTH TO BEAT XAVIER, 4-2
5.6.06 | Baseball
CINCINNATI, OH -- For the second straight day at Xavier's Hayden Field, nine innings were not enough to decide a winner. After battling through another pitcher's duel, this time between Temple's Arshwin Asjes and Xavier's Michael Louis, the Owls came out on top, 4-2, after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the tenth. Asjes struck out a season-high eight batters, scattering six hits and giving up two earned runs in nine innings for his fourth win of the season.
With the game tied at 2-2 after nine, Temple scored got on the board with two outs and recorded its first come-from-behind victory of the season. Sophomore Frank Nunan singled and scored when junior Dan Brady ripped his team-leading 16th double of the season. Sophomore Devon Swope followed with a RBI-single to put TU ahead, 4-2.
Senior Tim Foulkrod then pitched a scoreless tenth inning for his second save of the season, inducing a double-play to end the game.
Similar to yesterday's game, neither team found much success at the plate early on. It took until the bottom of the sixth for either team to register a run as the Musketeers (14-35, 4-16 A-10) plated a pair in the inning on a Chris Lozan two-run single. Asjes seemed to pitch better from that point on, striking out five batters over the final three innings before giving way to Foulkrod.
The Cherry and White (10-35, 4-14) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the score. In the eighth, sophomore Tom Dolan walked to lead off the frame and scored on a freshman Steve Mury single. TU could have added more in the frame, with runners on second and third and one out, but did not convert.
Down to its final at-bat for the second time in as many days, Temple put together a rally to send the game into extra innings. Brady (walk) and Swope (hit by pitch) reached base to open the frame, but remained on first and second after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt. Dolan then singled through the right side to plate Brady and tie the score. Again the visitors had a chance to win it, with the bases loaded and one out, but an inning-ending double play squashed any chance of a win in nine innings.
Nunan (2-for-5) and Dolan (2-for-3, RBI) paced the TU offense. Brady's 16 doubles tie him for sixth all-time in a single-season and the junior needs just one more hit to reach 100 for his collegiate career.
The series concludes on Sunday at noon.
