COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Jasmine Stone, who will be a freshman on the 2006-07 Temple women's basketball team, has been invited to attend the 2006 USA Basketball U18 National Team Trials, held June 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stone is no stranger to USA Basketball, participating in the 2005 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival.
Thirty-four of the nation's top 18-and-unders will be in consideration for spots on the eventual 12-member USA U18 National Team that will look to defend the United States' title at the 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championships. DePaul University (Ill.) head coach Doug Bruno has been named to lead the USA's 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship For Women Team, while Northern Illinois University head coach Carol Owens and University of Hartford head coach Jennifer Rizzotti will serve as assistant coaches.
The 6-3 forward is coming off of a senior season in which she was named Fourth Team All-American by both Parade Magazine and Street and Smith's Magazine. Voted one of USA Today's top juniors in 2005 and one of the top sophomores in 2004, Stone led Martin Luther King High School to a 24-1 record and a state runner-up finish in 2005. After averaging 19.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 5.2 blocks and 1.5 steals per game, she was rewarded with All-State, All-City and All-Metro honors during her junior season.
A Detroit News Class A All-State Second Team member in 2004, Stone helped King to a perfect 25-0 record and a state title during her sophomore season, averaging 17.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 4.8 bpg and 4.3 spg. In the summer of 2005, Stone was a member of the USA Youth Development Festival White team that went 2-3 and earned the silver medal. Stone posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds in the gold medal game against the Blue team and had eight points and 16 boards versus Blue during preliminary play. She finished the summer ranked 16th among all 2005 Festival participants for scoring (7.0 ppg), tied for second for rebounding (8.8 rpg), first for offensive rebounds per game (5.2) and ninth for defensive rebounds per game (3.6).
Finalists for the USA U18 National Team will remain in Colorado Springs, and the official 12-member squad will be announced prior to the start of the 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women.
The 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship For Women is being hosted by USA Basketball at the USOTC from June 28-July 2. The top four finishing teams will earn qualifying berths for the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship, slated to be held July 7-22 Bratislava, Slovakia. Teams in addition to the United States that will participate in the U18 tournament include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Puerto Rico. The event, which will be held at the USOTC Sports Center I, is free and open to the public.
