TEMPLE DROPS TOUGH MATCH TO KANSAS IN CLASSIC OPENER

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team opened its Temple Classic with a tough 3-1 loss to Kansas.  The teams spilt the first two games with Kansas winning game one (30-21) and Temple evening the match with a 30-27 game two win.  The Jayhawks took the final two games, 30-23, 30-24.

The Jayhawks out-hit Temple 22-9 in the first game of the match.  Temple rebounded in the second game with 25 kills in the back and forth battle. When Temple started slipping away from Kansas, Maira Mogollon (45 assists) and Christina DeMarco (14 kills) connected for a big kill that brought Temple up 20-19, forcing a Kansas timeout. Play remained tight, but with the help of Patricia Vernon's hitting (10 kills) and blocking (8) the Owls snatched the game to even the match.

The Jayhawks took the final two games and the match with the help of their hitting trio of Emily Brown (20 kills), Jana Correa (17) and Brittany Williams (15).  Savannah Noyes added 11 kills on a team-high .381 percentage while Katie Martincich led the offense with 58 assists.

DeMarco posted a match-high .583 hitting percentage and did not commit an error in 24 attempts. Yue Lie led Temple with 16 digs. Temple also continued putting up a strong front line, racking up an impressive 12 team blocks.

Temple will take on Rutgers at noon Saturday and then will face Maine in it final of the Temple Classic at 5:00 p.m.
