Dawn Staley Named 2007 Henry P. Iba Citizenship Award Female Winner

TULSA, OK - Temple University head women's basketball coach Dawn Staley has been named as the female recipient of the 2007 Henry P. Iba Citizenship Award. Given by the Rotary Club of Tulsa, the award, which is named in memory of former Oklahoma State University and U.S. Olympic basketball coach Henry Iba, is given each year to a male and female athlete who have excelled in both their sport and in their service to others.

Past award winners include Peyton Manning, Drew Bledsoe, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Karl Malone, Michelle Akers, Shannon Miller and Rebecca Lobo.

Staley was a five-time WNBA All-Star and was chosen to the league's inaugural all-decade team. She was a three-time Olympic gold medalist and was selected as a flag bearer at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. She twice was USA Basketball's Female Athlete of the Year.

Staley was USA Today's national high school basketball player of the year at Philadelphia's Dobbins Tech High School in 1989. She was a two-time national player of the year at the collegiate level and led Virginia to three Final Fours. When ESPN commemorated the first 25 years of women's Division I basketball, she was chosen one of the top 25 players of that era.

The WNBA is acknowledging Staley's off-the-court contributions. Beginning this year, the WNBA will present the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award to the player who best exemplifies the characteristics of a leader in the community in which she works or lives.

The award presentation will take place on June 4, 2007 at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  This year's male recipient and keynote speaker have yet to be announced.
