Philadelphia, PA- On a beautiful October afternoon the men's and women's crew teams took to the river for their first race of the season. With a head race style, teams were placed by their finishing time. The Owls stacked their race day with boats in the men's college four with coxswain, a men's college eight, and a men's college JV eight.
The mens college four with coxswain entered two Temple boats. Temple "A" placed 4th with a time of 15:06.9. The boat consisted of cowswain Rory Roberts, stroke Sam Cunningham, three seat Bob Protesto, two seat Pat Curran, and bow Don Powers. Temple "B" placed 6th with a time of 15:17. Temple "B" members were coxswain Mike Berger, stroke Tom Masterson, three seat Chris Schwartz, two seat Bill Gennaro, and bow Pat Welsh. The two Temple four boats would go on to race the men's college eight later in the afternoon.
The men raced in the college JV eight and finished fourth with a time of 14:37 to fall short of Drexel, Rutgers, and the United States Naval Academy. The boat members were coxswain Mike Berger, stroke Rick Rickus, seven seat John Masterson, six seat Scott Herring, five seat Brendan Cunningham, four seat Jason Sandolo, three seat Parsa Sharif, two seat Tom McCann, and bow Brad Long.
The men's college eight put a strong race together to place 4th with a time of 13:36 to be edged out by University of Delaware by three seconds. Senior Sam Cunningham stroked the Owls in their second race of the day. The men's eight boat was split into fours and raced earlier in the day.
"The Owls had a very consistant effort for it was the second race of the day for the entire boat," said head coach Gavin White.
Fall racing is 4,000 meters (or 2.4 miles), compared to the spring season, of a 2,000 meter sprint race. A head race style is a parade of boats that are set off by the officials at the starting line with 15 seconds between each team. Each boats' goal is to catch up to the boat that started before them and pass them.
The Owls have two weeks to prepare for the `Head of the Schuylkill' race on October 27th at 9 AM.
