PHILADELPHIA- Senior Sun Ying Ling had 15 digs to not only help the Temple volleyball team shut out Fordham 3-0 but become TU's all-time career dig leader. With her second dig of the match, Ling passed the old record of 1,632. She now has 1,646 career digs. Yun Yi Zhang posted a match-high 23 kills to lead the Owls to a 14-17 overall record, a 9-4 record in the Atlantic 10 and the A-10 East Divisional crown. Fordham falls to 15-19 overall, 5-8 in the Conference.
Temple easily took game one, 30-19, but the Rams made the Owls work for victories in games two and three. In game two, Fordham took an early lead, due to some Temple mental mistakes. Down 22-19, Ling had her second dig, which not only made her the all-time dig leader but also gave the Owls just the extra push that they needed to come back and take a 29-26 lead. The Rams were yet ready to give up and came back to tie the game at 29. Temple survived to win the game, 21-29. The Cherry and White took an early lead in game three but nagging mistakes allowed Fordham to tie the game four separate times. Tied at 29, the Rams went ahead 30-29 but Temple battled back to take the game, 30-32.
Patricia Vernon and Yue Liu were also in double digits in kills, each earning 11. Jackie Morrison dished 31 assists and Jacqueline Cowden blocked a match-high five opponent attacks.
Temple advances to its 12th straight Atlantic 10 Tournament next weekend, after winning the A-10 East Division. The Conference Championships will be held at Charlotte, November 16-18.
