Atlanta. Ga.-Lady Comfort earned a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Ashley Morris added 19 more but the Temple women's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting day and 26 turnovers, falling 59-49 to Georgia Tech (3-0) on Sunday afternoon. Comfort scored 12 points in the second half to spark a late Temple rally but TU could get no closer than six points. Morris was four-of-six from long range and dished a game-high four assists as Temple drops to 1-2 on the season.
The Owls finished with 26 turnovers and just a 37.8 shooting percentage. They were also edged, 36-34, on the boards. Play was physical in the opening minutes, with neither team scoring on its first few trips down the floor but each picking up a foul. Chioma Nnamaka got the game started with two straight baskets but Lady Comfort answered with Temple's first lay-up at 17:46. Ashley Morris picked up right where she left off, sinking a trey at 16:28 to make it 5-4 in Temple's favor. The score remained unchanged for over three minutes, with neither team able to make shots. The Yellow Jackets finally broke the stalemate at 12:55 to spark a 4-0 run but TU answered with a 7-0 run of its own at 11:35 to end its five minute scoreless drought and go ahead 12-8. The Owls then went cold, failing to score a basket for over seven minutes, turning the ball over five straight times and allowing Tech to ride a 15-0 run to a 25-12 lead at 3:53. Dawnnae Roberts finally got the Cherry and White going again with a three-pointer at 3:26 to cut spark a 9-0 run to make it 25-21 at 1:50. Morris scored six straight points to lead her squad during that stretch. Janie Mitchell ended TU's run with a lay-up at 1:20 but Nicole Pittman's last second lay-up made it a four-point game, 27-23, going into the break. TU finished with a 37.5% shooting percentage to Georgia Tech's 40.6%. Nnamaka got Tech started with a three point play at 19:48 to make it 30-23 but Comfort got fire with six straight points to keep the gap close, 34-30, at the 15 minute mark. Temple's post players soon began to struggle, picking up foul after foul and with just under 12 minutes to play, Comfort, Shenita Landry and Shanea Cotton were playing with three fouls. The guards were no better and the Yellow Jackets capitalized, building a double-digit lead yet again (43-32) by the 10 minute mark. Landry made the back end of two free throws at 9:14 for TU's first point in over six minutes, to make it 43-33, but Tech continued to roll. Morris scored Temple's next seven points to keep the 10 point differential and break Temple's six minute field goal drought. Just as they had in the first half, the teams both stalled, knotting the score at 50-40 for three minutes. Four free throws from Comfort's got Temple within six (50-44) at 3:07 and the Owls scrapped and chipped away at the Tech lead. The Yellow Jackets weren't finished yet, as Jill Ingram scored five straight points to make it 55-46, but Morris answered with a trey to make it a five point game (55-49) with under a minute to play. As time began to run down, the Owls began to foul, sending Ingram to the line for four more points and the 59-49 final result. LaKeisha Eaddy had a game-high four steals. Georgia Tech's Janie Mitchell led all scorers with 21 points, while Ingram finished with 12, thanks to a five-of-six performance from the charity stripe.Temple continues its NCAA Tournament caliber schedule next week in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. The Owls take on #10 Duke on November 23 and will play Purdue on the 24th.
