Women's Basketball To Battle Nation's Finest In 2007 Paradise Jam

St. Thomas, USVI-Temple (1-2) continues its November Madness this weekend, traveling to the 2007 Paradise Jam to take on #9 Duke (3-0), #22 Purdue (2-0) and either #2 Connecticut (2-0), #4 Stanford (3-0) or Old Dominion (3-0), November 22-25. All records are current entering the Tournament.

Temple will face off against Duke on Friday at 6 p.m. EST in a rematch of last season's 2007 Second Round NCAA Tournament game. The Blue Devils knocked off the Owls, 62-52, to advance to the Sweet 16. Duke leads the series 2-0. In their second game, the Cherry and White compete against Purdue on Saturday at 6 p.m. EST. TU leads the series, 1-0, but have not met the Boilermakers since the 1979 season. Temple will meet either UConn, Stanford or Old Dominion in the Championship Round on Sunday, depending on the standings once the first two games have been completed. It is a perfect 3-0 against UConn, with the last meeting coming in the 1982 season, and have never met Stanford or Old Dominion. Purdue and Duke will meet on Thanksgiving at 6 p.m. Lady Comfort earned a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds and Ashley Morris added 19 more but the Temple women's basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting day and 26 turnovers, falling 59-49 to Georgia Tech (3-0) on Sunday afternoon. Comfort scored 12 points in the second half to spark a late Temple rally but TU could get no closer than six points. Morris was four-of-six from long range and dished a game-high four assists as Temple drops to 1-2 on the season.The Owls finished with 26 turnovers and just a 37.8 shooting percentage. They were also edged, 36-34, on the boards. LaKeisha Eaddy had a game-high four steals. Morris leads Temple in scoring and assists, averaging 18.3 ppg and dishing 13 assists. She also leads Temple in three-point shooting, making 42% of her attempts. Comfort is tops in rebounding, grabbing an average of 11 rpg, and second in scoring (14.0 ppg). Leave it to Temple to not wait until March to play NCAA Tournament-calibur competition. The Owls are currently in the midst of a five-game road trip that includes five powerhouse opponents. Temple began its test at #8/10 Georgia (11/16) and faced the Yellow Jackets Sunday before traveling to the Virgin Islands to take on Duke, Purdue and either UConn, Stanford or Old Dominion in the Paradise Jam.

Temple is 9-77 all-time against ranked opponents and 1-36 against teams ranked in the Top 10. The last time the Owls defeated a ranked opponent was on January 19, 2006, when they topped then #9 Rutgers, 48-47.

Dawn Staley coached many of the players featured in the 2007 Paradise Jam this summer with USA Basketball. Candice Wiggins and Jayne Appel of Stanford and Charde Houston and Mel Thomas of Connecticut were all part of Staley's gold medal winning Pan American Games squad. Wiggins is also a member of the U.S. Senior National team, a squad for which Staley is an assistant coach.
