Women's Basketball Snaps Losing Skid With 61-47 Win Over #22/20 Purdue

St. Thomas, USVI- Ashley Morris scored a game-high 19 points to lead Temple to a 61-47 win over #22/20 Purdue on Saturday night at the 2007 Paradise Jam. The senior also dished a game-high four assists to give the Owls their first win since the season opener against Central Michigan. This also marks Temple's 10th all-time victory over a ranked opponent, and its first since it defeated then #9 Rutgers during the 2005-06 season.

After making its final field goal at 8:30, Temple converted 11 free throws in the last eight minutes of the game to build its convincing win. LaKeisha Eaddy was TU's next highest scorer with nine points, all of which came in the second half. Shenita Landry and Shanea Cotton each grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Owls, who earned a 40-35 advantage on the glass. The first half was all Temple, as the Owls began the game with a 7-2 run and then extended its lead to as much as 12 points with nearly a 46% shooting percentage. Purdue was just eight-for-29 from the field but a perfect seven-for-seven from the charity stripe, which was their lone source of scoring for a majority of the stanza. Lady Comfort started the scoring with a lay-up at 18:30 and Lakisha Freeman finally got the Boilermakers on the board with a jumper at 17:30. After a hot start, the Owls cooled a bit, turning the ball over three of their next four possessions. Luckily for the Cherry and White, Purdue wasn't bringing much offensive firepower, netting just two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest. A trey by Dawnnae Roberts gave TU a 10-point advantage (16-6) at 10:51 and a 4-2 Temple run made it 20-8 by 7:45. Two free throws by Kalika France finally got Purdue in double digits with 6:36 remaining, making it 20-10. Purdue got back on track in the final five minutes to keep pace with the Owls, getting as close as eight points before going into the locker room with a 31-23 result. The Cherry and White out-rebounded the Boilermakers, 20-16, which included 16 defensive rebounds. Danielle Campbell, who had netted seven of PU's nine points by the 10 minute mark, began the second half with a jumper for Purdue, cutting Temple's lead to six (31-25) at 19:30. The Owls came out cold, earning three turnovers and failing to net a basket until Eaddy drove the lane for a lay-up at 16:37. Three straight Temple free throws and a trey by Morris at 14:43 made it a double digit game yet again, 39-27. Michelle Clark gave Purdue its first basket in three minutes at 13:15 but the Owls continued to roll with a 6-0 run to make it 45-29 at 11:25. Temple enjoyed as much as a 14-point advantage before Purdue put together a 4-0 run to make it 48-38 at 8:54. Free throws, including three straight by Morris, allowed the Owls to switch between a 10 and 12 point lead for the next five minutes. Temple continued to produce at the charity stripe, stretching its lead to 18 points (60-42) with just over a minute and half to play. Purdue scored just five points in the final six minutes of the contest to give Temple the 61-47 victory, its first in four outings. Campbell was the lone Boilermaker in double figures with 15 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. The Owls will take on #4 Stanford in the third place game tomorrow at 6: 00 p.m. EST.
