PHILADELPHIA- The Temple fencing team opened its season with another strong performance at the 28th annual Temple Fencing Open. Temple had a total of ten competitors finish in the top eight for the three weapon categories.

"The girls did very well for their first tournament of the season,"said head coach Nikki Franke. "We were especially pleased with how well the girls adjusted to their opponents, as well as how well our freshman did. We definitely began the season on the right foot."

Newcomer Grace Wu brought home the gold for the Owls in the Epee event and fellow freshman Alyssa Lombardi and sophomore Kristin Howell tied for third. Also placing in the Epee event for the Cherry and White were Brianna Ferrara in 10th, Marla Nacey in 11th, and Kaitlyn Uckert in 24th.

In women's foil, Temple displayed tough competition. The Owls claimed four of the top eight spots. Senior Samantha Myles lead the Owls in the foil category finishing in second place behind UNC's Kaitlin Williamson, while the Owls Melissa Parker and Nina Gernes tied for third. Rounding out the top eight finishes for Temple was sophomore Meredith Bratton in seventh place. Also performing well was sophomore Abby Schifferle who finished in 13th place.

Temple fought another hard match in the sabre event. Freshman Audrey Barroso took second place in her first collegiate event, while senior Kristine Jones tied for third with UNC's Patti Sanders. Also placing for the Owls were freshman Samantha Pascarelli in seventh, sophomore Sara Haase in 11th, and sophomore Lauren Baker in 13th.

"We showed significant strength in all three weapons and are confident that it is an indication of the type of results that will be achieved in the coming season," said assistant coach Baker.
