Brooklyn, N.Y.- Jackie Morrison had a double-double with 39 assists and 18 digs but it was not enough, as Temple dropped a non-conference match to Long Island University, 3-1, on Tuesday night. Yun Yi Zhang contributed a match-high 20 kills as Temple dropped to 12-17 on the season. LIU improves to 17-12.
The Blackbirds used an eight-point scoring streak late in the first game to take a 30-26 win but the Owls rallied to take game two, 30-23. Long Island jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the outset of the third stanza, forcing the Owls to take a timeout. Temple regrouped, breaking the Blackbirds' serve and used the momentum to whittle the Long Island advantage to two points at 11-9. The Blackbirds slowly pulled away, building a five-point cushion at 20-15. Then, with the Owls trailing 25-22, Long Island ran off four straight points to put Temple in a 29-22 hole. After a pair of Blackbird attack errors, LIU scored a kill to give it the game, 30-24. In the fourth frame the Blackbirds built an early edge yet again and stretched to seven points at 19-12. Temple fought back to within two points when a block by Patricia Vernon and Jacqueline Cowden cut the Long Island lead to 22-20. The Blackbirds scored eight of the next 12 points en route to another 30-24 win.
Yue Liu and Vernon were also in double figures in kills, with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Jaclyn Bretitgan had 10 digs and Cowden had a team-high five blocks. Senior Sun Ying Ling earned eight digs, which makes her just 17 digs away from TU's all-time career dig leader.
The Owls return to A-10 play on Thursday when they visit La Salle at 7 p.m.
