PHILADELPHIA- Temple fencing competed over the weekend at the Princeton Invitational. The Owls faced tough competition with teams such as Harvard and NYU in attendance, but the Cherry and White fought hard-hitting matches for early season victories.
"This was a good meet to start our regular season competition with," stated assistant coach Bradley Baker. "In the final poll last year Harvard was ranked #3, while Princeton was #10 and we (Temple) finished #9. The first poll for this season isn't expected until late January."
The Owls started the day against host Princeton with a 17-10 victory. Temple won with dominance in the foil (7-2) and sabre (6-3), but the team lost by one in epee (4-5) to the Tigers.
Next, the Owls found themselves in a tough meet with Harvard and fell to the Crimson 12-15. The epee squad lead the way with a 7-2 result over Harvard, but the Crimson took the Owls in sabre (3-6) and foil (2-7).
In the last match-up on the day the Cherry and White met NYU and were victorious with a 19-8 result. The sabre squad stepped up for the Owls with a perfect 9-0 ending, while epee added to the win with a 6-3 decision.
