Owls Cruise with 3-0 Mark at Drew Invitational

MADISON, NJ - The Temple women's fencing team continued its winning ways Saturday at the Drew Invitational following a perfect 3-0 record. The Owls bested Fairleigh Dickinson (23-4), New Jersey Institute of Technology (26-1) and host Drew (22-5) en route to their second consecutive unbeaten performance.
Last weekend, as hosts of the Temple Invitational, the Cherry and White posted a 5-0 mark.
"The girls fenced very well in all weapons today," said 35th-year Temple mentor Nikki Franke. "They were able to minimize mistake, which allowed them to be successful."
The Cherry and White epee charge was led by junior Marla Nacey's perfect 5-0 performance. Freshman Kristin Howell also went unblemished with a 4-0 mark while sophomore Kaitlyn Uckert tallied a 3-1 record. Junior Brianna Ferrara rounded out assistant coach Brad Baker's rotation with a 2-3 finish.
Freshman Abigail Schifferle (4-0), sophomore Melissa Parker (3-0) and junior Samantha Myles (3-0) led the all Temple foilists with perfect records. Freshman Meredith Bratton and sophomore Sabrina Shapiro each tallied 3-1 marks while sophomore Nina Gernes went 2-1 on the afternoon.
Franke's sabre line-up was led by junior Ashlee Phillips' flawless 5-0 record. Junior Kristine Jones and freshman Christie Griffith each tallied 4-0 marks while freshman Lauren Baker finished 4-1. Freshman Sara Haase wrapped up the Temple sabre attack with a 4-2 record.
"We are very pleased with the continued growth of our team and look forward to that growth continuing with each meet down the road," commented Franke.
The Cherry and White will take a two-week hiatus and resume competition on Saturday, February 24 at 8:00 a.m. at the Northwestern Invitational.
