KINGSTON, RI - The Temple men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete for the Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday at the conference's annual meet, held this year at the University of Rhode Island's Mackal Field House. The men's team will look to improve upon last season's eighth place finish, while the women will try to move up from its tenth place showing in 2006.
Sophomoes Jason Sullivan, Bryce Buffaloe and Joshua Louis have had impressive winters and will be in the mix for an A-10 individual title. Sullivan owns the league's top time in the 800m (1:54.44), while Louis is second in the high jump (6-8) and Buffaloe is fifth in the weight throw (55-3 1/2).
Freshman Melissa Gale goes into Saturday's meet as the top pole vaulter on the women's side with a clearance of 11-3 3/4. Classmate Brittney McRae has the fourth best 55m hurdles time (8.34) and long jump mark (18-3 3/4). Sophomore Amanda Cole, fresh off a new school record in her last performance, has the fourth-best weight throw (52-0 3/4).
Charlotte claimed the 2006 crown in its first-ever Championship as it amassed 172 points, the second-highest total in league history. La Salle equaled its best-ever finish with a runner-up showing last season, while Saint Joseph's placed third. Rhode Island has won five A-10 Championships, the most of any program in Conference history.
Charlotte senior Shareese Woods, who established a meet record in the 400m dash (55.11) at the 2006 Championship en route to earning Most Outstanding Track Performer honors, looks to defend her titles in the 200m and 400m dashes. Woods recorded a school record and 2007 NCAA Indoor Championship automatic qualifying time of 23.07 in the 200m dash on Feb. 8-9 at the Arkansas Tyson Invitational. Kerstin Greene of Fordham seeks her third gold medal at the A-10 Championship after winning the high jump in 2005 and long jump in 2006, while Richmond's Jasmine Major looks to defend her crown in the 55m hurdles.
On the men's side, Charlotte looks to defend its title as it edged Rhode Island at the 2006 Championship, 180-146. The 49ers are led by senior sprinter Jason Moore, who has provisionally qualified for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships in both the 55m and 200m dashes.
Rhode Island, which seeks its fifth title in the last seven years, is anchored by senior Ashhad Agyapong, the Most Outstanding Track Performer each of the past two years. Agyapong has won five individual gold medals at the A-10 Championship and is the two-time defending champion in both the 200m and 400m dashes. La Salle senior Sean Quigley, who captured gold in the 5,000m run in 2005 and 3,000m run in 2006, has provisionally qualified for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile, 3000m run and 5,000m run.
The high jump kicks off the men's Championship at 9:00am with Charlotte, Fordham, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis, Temple and Xavier vying for the title.
