JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Two standouts represented Temple men's track & field in what became the final meet for the program in its 89-year history. Junior Matt Kacyon made his second appearance at the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet, while senior Gabe Pickett competed at the NCAA level for the third year in a row.
"This is the end of an era," said Temple head coach Eric Mobley, "and it's kind of sad. We were hoping to make it through to the final round of NCAA's, but you can't take away from what these young men have accomplished. We were one meet short of going out with a super bang, but to have representation at the first round was still phenomenal. The only other thing we could have asked for was to make it to the next rounds, but sometimes that doesn't happen.
I'm very proud of these two young men, and of all the men that have come through the program that I've had the opportunity to coach."
Kacyon was a little less than eight seconds off his qualifying time for the meet, which had been a personal best for him in the 3,000 meter steeplechase of 8:51.83. In his final meet for Temple, he finished in a time of 8:59.38 to place 10th in his heat and 28th overall out of 48 competitors.
Pickett gave it everything he had in the final meet of his career, but struggled to land a clean triple jump and did not record a mark on three attempts. His strong senior season included fourth-place finishes in the triple jump at both the American Athletic Conference Championships and the Penn Relays.
