WILMINGTON, NC - UNC Wilmington had 16 hits and scored in all but one inning to complete the series sweep of Temple, 15-3, on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field. The Owls had a series-high 10 hits, including two each from sophomore Kyle Obal and freshman Matt Heltz. Junior Stan Orzechowski blasted a solo-homerun in the second inning and sophomore John Coyle added a two-run shot in the ninth.
But the day truly belonged to the Seahawks. UNCW was consistent across the scoreboard, scoring two runs in five frames, one in the first and four in the eighth. The only scoreless inning for the hosts was the fifth.
Sophomore Matt Mongiardini (0-1) made his first appearance in the Cherry and White and suffered the loss after throwing four innings and allowing four earned runs. A trio of freshman also made their debuts--Mike Click, Ryan Thomas and Matt Blackburn.
UNC Wilmington (3-4) made the most of four Temple errors in the game, including three in the third that led to pair of unearned runs. Steve Halford led the way for UNCW with a 4-for-5 performance and four RBI.
Jeff Hatcher picked up the win for the Seahawks, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing one earned run.
The Owls continued to show improved power, slugging their sixth homerun of the weekend. After hitting 15 dingers in 53 games a year ago, TU has six already in three games.
Temple returns to the diamond on Friday in a three-game series at New Mexico State. Game times for all three contests are set for 3 PM EST (1 PM local).
