PHILADELPHIA - Temple juniors Tom Dolan and Ryan Weber have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the five head coaches. The organization, which was called the Philadelphia Diamond Five last season, is now under the umbrella of the Philadelphia Big Five office.
Dolan threw eight innings, allowing only three hits and two earned runs, to lead Temple to its first win of the season on Saturday, a 7-4 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday at Askew Field. Dolan struck out seven batters, one short of a career-high, and retired the first 11 batters. His only blemish was a two-run homer by Leo Aguirre in the sixth. He allowed only one base-runner to advance past first and walked just one batter. He is 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA on the season.
Weber batted .571 (8-for-14) over the weekend at New Mexico State with a slugging percentage of .929 and an on-base percentage of .625. He scored four runs, drove in three more and added two doubles and a homerun. His best day was a 4-for-5 showing with a double, homerun and three RBI on Friday. Weber leads the team with a .417 batting average.
Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season. The second annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
