Shapiro, Uckert, Baker Compete at USFA Tournament

ATLANTA, GA - Three Temple University fencers competed in a United States Fencing Association (USFA) tournament over the past weekend in Atlanta, Ga. The tournament comprised of fencers from all across the country carrying a USFA rating of "C" and below.
Sophomore foilist Sabrina Shapiro finished as a finalist in the Division III event while earning her USFA "C" rating. Out of 92 competitors at the tournament, Shapiro ranked third.
Sophomore epeeist Kaitlyn Uckert also finished as a finalist, but in a Division II event that garnered her a USFA "C" rating. Out of 76 competitors, Uckert placed seventh.
Freshman sabreist Lauren Baker advanced as far as the quarterfinals in the Division III event. Out of 50 competitors, Baker ranked 21st.
"All in all, it was an excellent tournament for our fencers," said Temple head coach Nikki Franke. "After working very hard this season, it was nice for them to improve their USFA classifications at a national tournament to end their 2007 season."
On Wednesday, Franke and the Cherry and White will await word from the NCAA Fencing Committee concerning Championship selections. From the Mid-Atlantic region, seven women fencers will be selected in each weapon to compete at the Championship in two weeks at Drew University (Madison, NJ).
