PHILADELPHIA - With its first Murphy Cup Champion Crew looking on, the Temple Men's Varsity 8 defended its title, defeating runner-up Lehigh by six seconds to capture the 2007 Murphy Cup in the 25th Anniversary of the Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River. The win capped an historic day for the Owls, which had two new eight-oared shells donated by Tony Stefanski, a member of the first Murphy Cup Varsity 8 gold medal boat, christened in a morning cerermony.

The Owls Second Varsity 8 also rowed to gold, besting second-place Drexel by 12 seconds.

"It was fitting that our top two crews won on the 25th Anniversary," said Temple head coach Gavin White, who has guided the Cherry and White to 24 Murphy Cup titles. "It was also all the more special in that John Murphy's parents were and so many alums came back."

The men's Varsity 8 was comprised of Thomas Golder (coxswain), Patrick Curran (stroke), Robert Protesto (7), Dante Cammarata (6), James Harding (5), Peter Gostling (4), Nick Vlahos (3), Thomas Haubrich (2), Don Powers (bow).

The Men's Second Varsity 8 was comprised of Rory Roberts (coxswain), Sam Cunningham (stroke), Timothy Malloy (7), Brendan Uhll (6), Eric Alexander (5), Bill Gennaro (4), Matt Hanlin (3), Chris Bushek (2), and Joseph Welsh (bow).

On the women's side, the Owls Second Varisty 8 and Lightweight 8 rowed to third place finishes to lead head coach Tim Hagan's charges.

"It was a solid showing for our first northern Regatta of the season," said Hagan. "I was really pleased with how well our second varsity 8 did today."

The women's Second Varsity 8 was comprised by Jennifer Azeles (coxswain), Anne Mikolajewski (stroke), Brittany Sugden (7), Bailey Chick (6), Laura Scullin (5), Carolyn Bailey (4), Amelia Mango (3), Kate Guth (2), Nicole Wagner (bow).

The Women's Lightweight 8 was comprised of Maureen McDermitt (coxswain), Laura Austin (stroke), Katie Hoban (7), Danielle Britton (6), Jacqueline Swan (5), Jennifer Morin (4), Kelly McAndrew (3), Brenna Millard (2) and Rebecca Schillinger (bow).

The Owls Varsity 8 of coxswain Jillian Ploof (coxswain), Stephanie Hanlin (stroke), Laura Altimari (7), Amanda Fattori (6), Rachel Jordan (5), Leah Silverstein (4), Colleen Sullivan (3), Jessica Herrman (2) and Amanda Barr (bow) and the Novice 4 of Danbie Choi (coxswain), Kendra Dickenson (stroke), Justine Willem (3), Tulani Washington-Plaskett (2) and Melissa Bracco (bow) placed third in their heats.

The Temple women's team next competes at the San Diego Classic (Mar. 31, Apr. 1) while the men's team returns to the water on April 6 at the George Washington Invitational.
