ROCK HILL, SC - Temple managed just four hits on offense, and just one after the third inning, to finish off the Winthrop Coca-Cola Classic on a sour note with a 8-1 loss to Kent State on Sunday afternoon. The Owls were only down 3-1 heading into the seventh but the Golden Flash scored four runs in the frame to break the game open. The Cherry and White will take Monday off before taking on Duke on Tuesday and #1 North Carolina on Wednesday.

The Owls (2-7) took a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI-groundout by junior Mike Kelch that drove in junior Ryan Weber, who reached on an error. The lead was short-lived, however, as Kent State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning off TU starter Matt Mongiardini.

The Golden Flash (3-7) added another run in the fourth with two outs. Mongiardini pitched a perfect fifth inning and fought out of a jam in the sixth, but got into trouble in the seventh. He recorded the first out of the inning and a walk, error and single loaded the bases and was replaced by freshman Kyle Monahan. Will Vazquez then provided a two-run double and Chris Tremblay singled with two outs to make the score 7-1. KSU added an insurance run in eighth.

Sophomore Kyle Obal's single in the eighth was Temple's only hit past the third inning. TU's only other baserunner was a walk to Weber, also in the eighth.

Mongiardini (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings. Evan Smith (1-0) pitched five innings without giving up an earned run for the win.
