#1 North Carolina Walks Past Owls, 14-0

CHAPEL HILL, NC - #1 North Carolina banged out 13 hits and took advantage of 15 walks to coast to a 14-0 victory over the Owls on Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels, who were the national runners-up a year ago, are ranked #1 by Baseball America and #3 by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball. Senior Dan Brady singled and doubled and junior Stan Orzechowski had a pair of singles for the Cherry and White.
The Tar Heels (12-1) got on the board with five runs in the second on just two hits. Reid Fronk lined a three-run triple, just out of the reach of a diving Devon Swope in center, to give UNC a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice-fly by Chad Flack to deep right-center chased Temple starter Tom Bingham for junior Arshwin Asjes. Tim Federowicz then doubled to right to put Carolina ahead, 5-0.
The Cherry and White nearly got on the board in the third, but a laser of a throw from Fronk in left-field cut down freshman Matt Heltz at the plate on a two-out single by junior Mike Kelch. Temple stranded three in the fourth, failing to take advantage of singles by Brady and Heltz.
All-American SS Josh Horton's two-run triple down the right-field line opened a six-run fourth for the Heels. Three-straight RBI singles and a run-scoring fielder's choice made the score 11-0 after four innings.
North Carolina added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Bingham (1-2) suffered the loss for Temple after allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and walked four batters. Adam Warren (2-0) was the victor after throwing four shutout innings.
Temple (2-9) will host Buffalo in its home-opener on Saturday at Skip Wilson Field. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at noon, with a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning contest. Sunday's nine-inning game will begin at 1 PM.
