NEWARK, DE - Delaware tied the game with a solo home run in the ninth and won it with a walk-off single in the tenth to defeat Temple, 7-6, for its seventh straight win on Tuesday at Bob Hannah Stadium. Sophomore Sean Barksdale extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a third inning single, while junior Stan Orzechowski was on base all six times with three singles, two walks and a hit by pitch.
Trailing 5-3 after six innings, Temple scored three runs in the seventh to take a 6-5 advantage. Senior Dan Brady was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game and junior Devon Swope walked to open the inning. Brady would later score on a wild pitch and a sophomore Kyle Obal double plated Swope to tie the game. Orzechowski then delivered a single to left to score Obal and give Temple a one-run lead.
Freshman Richie Gargel held the Blue Hens scoreless in the seventh and eighth before Brendan Menchaca blasted his fifth home run of the year over the scoreboard in right to start the ninth. After a single and walk, Gargel was replaced by classmate Kyle Monahan, who worked out of the no-out jam without allowing a run.
After the Owls went down in order in the tenth, Delaware's Kyle Davis opened the bottom half of the inning with a walk. He moved to third on a mishandled sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to Menchaca loaded the bases with nobody out. Alex Buchholz then singled to rightfield to end the game and hand TU its fifth straight loss, all of which have come on the road.
The game was not atypical for a mid-week contest, featuring 10 pitchers, 12 walks, and 10 hit batters. In fact, the 10 hit batsmen nearly set an NCAA record but fell two short, while four of Temple's six runs reached base by being plunked.
Neither team had much success driving runners in as each team left 14 runners on base. Temple left the bases loaded in the first, second and fourth innings and had a runner on second with one out in the ninth, but failed to score the important insurance run.
The Cherry and White scored its first run in the second on an Orzechowski RBI single and added two more in the fifth on a double-play groundout and Obal single. Orzechowski has now been on base seven straight plate appearances.
Obal and sophomore Jamie Abercrombie were the only Owls besides Orzechowski to record multiple hits.
Monahan (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing one earned run in one inning. Steve Spiese (1-1) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief for Delaware (14-16).
Temple (11-22) returns home tomorrow for just the second time in the past 24 days to host Bucknell at 3:30 PM.
