AMBLER, PA - Xavier took advantage of 12 walks and remained a game out of first place in the Atlantic 10 with an 11-4 victory over Temple on Friday at Skip Wilson Field. Sophomore Sean Barksdale had three hits, extending his hitting streak to 17 games, and knocked in a pair of runs. The series resumes on Saturday at 1 PM.
"It's tough to recover from 12 walks," head coach Rob Valli said. "Anytime that you give that many free passes, its going to be a struggle to win the game."
The Owls got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Senior Dan Brady drove a two-run single to left to score junior Ryan Weber, who had walked, and Barksdale, who singled. Unfortunately, the hosts added just two more runs the rest of the way, both off the bat of Barksdale. He scored junior Stan Orzechowski in the fourth on a single and plated him once again in the ninth on a groundout.
Xavier, who has now won six straight games, handed junior Arshwin Asjes his second shortest outing of the season, chasing the right-hander after four innings. The Musketeers tied the game with a pair of unearned runs in the second, as Asjes threw away a sacrifice bunt and walked two batters. XU (18-20, 11-2 A-10) took the lead with three runs in the third and never looked back in handing Temple its fourth straight loss in A-10 play.
Asjes (1-4) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) in four innings. He walked six and struck out two.
XU's Bill Konecny (3-3) was solid on the mound for the visitors. He went eight innings, scattering eight hits, and gave up three earned runs. Joe Kohler pitched the ninth, allowing an earned run. Adam Lipski was 4-for-4 and scored four runs for the Musketeers.
Freshman Mike Click and junior DaShone Kirkendoll threw the last two innings without allowing an earned run for TU (12-23, 4-9 A-10).
Tomorrow's game is part of the Cherry and White Day festivities at Ambler. First pitch for baseball is at 1 PM. The highlight of the day is the spring football game, which begins at 2:30 PM.
